My race report. Race #1 Race #3 Check out the new paint, click here. Race #3 at Sacramento Ca on 9-5-09 Off to the race left the house at 10pm Friday, just fell short of making it straight through by 2 hours. Crashed out in some hotel parking lot for a few hours with my kid. Woke up to the sun in our eyes and my boy feeding some stray kittens our ham sandwiches from last night. Stopped in Elk Grove to give the car a quick self serve car wash and grab some breakfast at Jim Boys. Sup-prizing that it was not all that good? But I don't normally have breakfast there. Love the lunch and dinner but now I know I don't like the breakfast. Well off to the track assuming we will be about 20 cars back only to find that we are third in line? That's good and bad, is this going to be a low turn out? Although it's normally hot this time of year and that can keep the non diehards away but it was only in the high 80ish. Nice talking with the racers before getting in the gate. OK in now and park next to the PRA hotel with E-Girl and her mechanic slave!!! decide to make a test pass as we get about a ½ hour be fore the first round. So I run it hard and make the pass only to hear a sudden clicking sound, so I shut it off http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOJOKwNB5-k Get a tow back and decide to pull it apart on the 1 and 2 side. Yep!! they are cracked and one piston has a collapsed ring glans. So do I call it a day and become a spectator or walk the swap meet? I'm in the points race and would love to win one of these championships so off to the used parts section. Find 4x used 94 A's with the valve notch in them. $100 bucks, so now I have to make a effort to get it back together at least. Well my barrels are cut .09” off the bottom to get .037” total deck so these ones will drop the compression on the one side. I decide I will just brake the beam for the points then as I don't know what a motor with that drastic change in compression from side too side will do. At around 7pm I get the thing all back in one piece only to find that the other side is not making the pissssst, pisssst sound also when cranking. I'm all in at this point, so off comes 3 and 4 side. Now on this side I have 1 x burned piston and 2 x split barrels. What the heck is going on? Look at the carb and notice the float is low. I did shut it off the moment I heard the sound. Turn on the fuel pump only to find it fill's up the bowl. That means it's a needle and seat thing. I have never had this problem so it must be because I was running it out the back door and not on and off the throttle like in a normal Super Comp race. So now its 10pm and all back together again. Quick fire up and sounds good I'm OK for the last round tomorrow. Just then Dave M pulls up on a pit bike and say,s “ A.J pit bike racing in 5 minutes at Mikes trailer” Most of you know about the rest of that night!!! Next day I fire it up and sounds real good, I might race this thing now. Smoke, Smoke and more Smoke? My first thought is bad carbon seal. But not the same. I have a quick talk with a PRA official about qualifying rules. I can just brake the beam to get the points. OK so all the work to brake the beams, I know just suck it up and brake the beams for the last round of qualifying. Thats the smart thing to do. So I brake the starting light beam and back out and drive back down to return road but it's not smoking once under power? Its the barrels and rings not seating or just junk as I was not able to re-hone or change the cross hatch on them. That means I can race but might have some extra smoke when not under a load. I get John Mead first round, a class act and one of the nicest guys to talk to. I have raced John before and the outcome of those was one win for John and one for me. I get out of the hole first with a good light and pull hard, the motor is working REAL GOOD. So good I leave it in third for a long time next to john (see video). I am the winner!!!!! no way that is what its all about!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Iw9R_8y_y8 Next is a bye run so I save it and just creep down the track. Now I will face Rob Meyer (M.r #1 qualifier with a 10.906) can you say “on your game Rob!!!!! When I raced John my car hoped a little off the line as I did not do a burn out (did not want John to see how bad my car was smoking and give him some confidence) So with Rob the cat is out of the bag so I do the burn out and can you say chooo chooo? I can see the PRA official looking at my car as I back it up from the burn-out. If he wants to call it I would have no problem as not often do you have this kind of smoke with out oil. But I don't have any oil making its way to the track so off we go. In the video I make a big mistake and get completely off the gas to close in that gap I have over Rob. I should have just lifted a little as you can here me get back in it hard as Rob goes around me and I come back around him just in time to get the win. Now it looks like I know what I'm doing!!! Rob and I talk about our race on the top end (I think is the best part of racing) the spectators don't get to see this I wish they could here it as we are just amp-end up on such a natural high each time after making a pass! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qA8Br2sexYA Well battery is dead from trying to crank and I have to make it back for some recharge and coll off but I can't make it back??? I hear... “A.J you need a tow” Is that god?!!! No just Marcus Pamquist but at this time its close!!! Yes please Marcus. So I run to Allens pits and ask for him to give me the most time as I have a hot car with a dead battery. Allen is a stand up guy and says no problem and that he will not race unless I'm there next to him. Now that's the type of racer I like. Same smoky burn-out and back it up, I come off the line hard with a 1.44 60' foot 6.43 1/8 mile and I'm just way out in front. So much out in front that I hand the win to him with a 10.54 All me I got a long first gear and second gear wheelie that carried me down the track so by the time I looked over to Allen I was ¾ down the track and not at the ½ way point like usual. Well I gave the win to him with a 10.54 to his 10.70. note I was doing 6.43 in the 1/8 mile. WOW!!!! all this on some really used piston and barrels! Well Nice talk with Allen afterwords and that cold Corona that was waiting for me!! Stayed at the Sierra Hotel (across from host hotel) only $71.60 with my AAA discount and a real nice place. For brunch my boy and I went to Jim Boys one more time to give it a second chance. (I only get it twice a year and don't want to leave Sacramento on a bad meal) Now that's the meal I needed to end the weekend on a good note. They got it right this time. I decided to take the 5 fwy back instead of the 99fwy. I know the 5 is boring and 30 miles longer but made a nice change to take my kid on!!!! Thanks to my, girl, kids, dad, Joe, Dan and his girl, E-girl, Dimspy, the guy I got the piston and barrels from in the swap meet , Marcus, and if I missed any one I'm sorry!!! Race #1 2009 Well new combo and paint to start off the 2009 season. With the success of last years combo i did not want to change a lot so same 86x94 with the 5.8” rod. Now with one of our newer cams ( LBC 4.7) as i just needed 200-500 rpm s out of the old combo. I did step up and port my heads this year, i know its seams strange to port heads all day but not my own! I was trying to limit the power with the heads but notice it did not make a bit of difference! Last year i slapped a set of stock valve unported heads on and the car still ran 10.90's! So the new combo has 40x37 with only a pocket port, +.200” valves with K800 springs, set at 9.0:1. I also changed the turbo with a T3T4 .63 on the exhaust and a TB73 compressor. Comes on nice and only running 7lbs boost were as last year i was up at 12-20lbs. The car leaves the line nice and soft with 1.45 60' times 6.90's 1/8 mile at 103mph. I still have the old Super Gas carb gear box. 3.78, 2.36, 1.65, 1.36 with a 3.88 RP. Thats why i grab forth before the 1/8 mile. Check out some of the in car videos on the site!!! When i run it out the back door its at 8400rpm s and will run a 10.70's. So the Saturday before the Phoenix race my dad and i headed to Surprize AZ to test the new motor. First pass i had the rev limiter set at 7,000 and rolled out of the gate soft, hit my marks and clicked off a low 11 sec pass. The car sound so good and felt nice the i told my dad that i was going to launch it the next pass! Ran the valves, checked for things in the oil, Changed the limiter to 7,500 and start launch set at 6,800. all good to go... Came out of the hole soft with a 1.48 60' , 6.89 1/8 mile and ran 10.92 at the end!!!! Its going back on the trailer as we are there dad!!!!! Next day i figured i would not change a thing, first pass, 11.23. I know its hotter today and i need to lean it out just a bit but was hopping for a little closer to the number. So i decide to change my shift points to 7,600 rpm's.......11.22???? Hey!!!! OK so it did not like that??? Pulled off the muffler, just a bit richer setting, and raised the out of the gate limiter up 200 rpms...... Came out of the hole hard but i shut it off to soon and ran a 11.33!!!!!! Dam it..... “O...well” So looks like i get E-Girl for first round. Now i would love to see her win the race but I'm not going to give it to her. If she was racing any one else i would be cheering her on, hell i cheer her on when she is racing me!!!, so out of the hole hard, i can say i cut a light on her!!! soft wheelie good 60' feet, grab second and then its off.... not that I'm off to the end of the track....no it's turned off,,, the motor.. whats going on? The car has lay'ed over hard with lack of power? She drives by and i smile as i just gave her the win. I hop out of the car and wave to the crowd then i see that the nice newly polished end castings on my car (that the polisher polished the end were the boot slips on) and i can see that the boot has slipped off.... The worlds largest intake leek!!! So i get a tow off the track back to the pits. We go to push the car on the trailer only to find that my 5 year old Super Gas gear box is locked up? Thats scary as this thing could have did this on the track at 120mph!!!! There goes that new paint job!!! I am so lucky not to have that happen and made it back. So i get to change the gears now, makes me want to change the cam again!!!! Congrats to the Baron crew for a win... still makes big power on last years combo!! “I know Scott”.. I'm working on the new heads for your guys and will get them out ASAP to you!!!!. All i can say is you think the baron is fast now people, wait tell the new combo makes its way down the track in Sac!!!! First 7 sec pass in Pro Mod???? “its coming and coming fast!!!!! Glad to see Russel win Super Gas, #1 and wins his first time out in the class!!! Thats the ticket!!! Thanks to: my girl, dad, kids, helpers at the shop Joe, Paul and James, the body guy, sticker guy for coming thou in one day, Bugorama crew, and last the CHP guy for letting me off once back in CA!! Dont know if i will have the car in time for the Bug-in but should have the twin turbo fast back in time!!!! Yes....can you say?... “Twins”!!!!!!!! |
